MADISON – Math Team students from Bob Jones High School achieved top-ranking honors in the University of Alabama 35th annual High School Mathematics Tournament.
UA’s Department of Mathematics and Office of Undergraduate Admissions sponsored the event on Nov. 5.
Bob Jones ranked in first place in tournament competition among 15 schools competing in three different divisions dealing with questions from pre-calculus mathematics.
In individual competition, 130 students entered this component. “We took eight students, and everyone of them placed individually in the Top 10,” sponsor Kimberly Cox said.
Claiming individual awards were senior Joey Li, first; sophomore David Li, third; senior Winston Van, fourth; junior Shantanu Kadam, fifth; junior Alan Grissom, sixth; sophomore Corey Tolbert, eighth; sophomore Aditi Limaye, ninth; and senior Amelia Goldston, tenth.
“I was extremely proud of our team and how well they did at this tournament,” Cox said. “They made a perfect score in the team round, and the closest competitor made only half of our score.”
In addition, “It speaks well of the team when every member places in the top 10 in the individual competition. I couldn’t be more pleased with their showing this weekend. I look forward to what we do during the rest of this year,” Cox said.
This semester, Cox is teaching pre-advanced placement (AP) pre-calculus and pre-AP pre-calculus for Math Team members. In January 2017, she will switch to pre-AP algebra II/trigonometry, along with pre-AP algebra II/trigonometry for Math Team.
Maribel van der Zijp has assisted the team as “team mom” for the past four years, Cox said. Bob Jones Math team has 40 members.
