Munster’s career ran from Texas to Bosnia

MADISON – Retired Lieutenant Colonel Matthew G. Munster’s military career extended more than 20 years.

Born in Anchorage, Alaska in 1967, Munster is the youngest of four children.

His late father, Lieutenant Colonel Conrad H. Munster, was a distinguished Vietnam War veteran who served his country for 25-plus years.

Matthew Munster’s sister Peggy works for the airline industry in Houston, Texas while his oldest brother Buzz of Colorado Springs, Colo. is a retired Colonel. His brother Pete of Calhan, Colo. is a retired Lieutenant Colonel.

In 1991, Matthew Munster graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the University of Colorado with a bachelor’s degree in history. He received Regular Army Commission as Second Lieutenant in the Armor Branch.  

He was assigned to Fort Hood, Texas as a Tank Platoon Leader, Support Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer and Battalion Logistics Officer. Afterward, Munster was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division and later Company Commander with D/2-37 AR supporting Operations in Bosnia.  

Munster completed basic branch assignments with 3rd Battalion, 339th Regiment, 75th Division as Company Trainer and Battalion Operations Officer and was assessed into Army Acquisition Corp. in 2000.  

In 2004, Munster earned a master’s degree in procurement and acquisition management from Webster University and is currently Level III-certified in Program Management and Level II-certified in Testing.

In acquisitions, Munster served as Stryker Wheeled Vehicle Operational Test Officer, Assistant Product Manager, Future Combat Systems and Manned Ground Vehicle Fleet. With Department of the Army, Munster worked as Systems Coordinator (DASC) for Future Combat Systems Program in Washington D.C.

The Munster family moved to Madison in 2009 for his work as Product Manager for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Modernization, Program Executive Office Aviation.  

In 2012, Munster retired from the U.S. Army. Currently, he works for Sierra Nevada Corporation as Director of Business Development.  

Married 22 years, Munster and the former Sandra Richwagen of Houston, Texas have two children: Claire, freshman at Texas Christian University, and Jack, junior at Madison Academy.

Munster’s hobbies include watching his daughter swim, watching his son play lacrosse and spending time on the lake.
