American Legion urges veterans to join now

MADISON – This week, local veterans are activating a vigorous campaign to encourage men and women to join the American Legion organization.

The American Legion Posts of Madison County will conduct their “Madison County Recruiting Campaign” on April 20-22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

American Legion members will be stationed on Redstone Arsenal at the Exchange and gas stations (called Shopettes). They will provide information on the mission of the organization.

“The American Legion Posts in Huntsville and Madison are asking for our veterans to come out and join their post,” Commander Carlos F. Woods said. Woods serves as Madison County Commander and Madison Post 229 Commander.

“The American Legion is the largest veterans’ organization in the United States. It is a non-profit organization. Our four pillars are: (1) Veteran affairs and rehabilitation; (2) National security; (3) Americanism; and (4) Children and youth,” Woods said.

“Come out and hear more about how the American Legion can support you and how you can support us,” Woods said. .

Woods recently met with other Legionnaires to formalize their recruiting plans. The veterans included Micky Williams, Huntsville Post 176 Commander; Don Pinkerton, Huntsville Post 237 Commander; and Larry Vannoy, Madison Post 229 Adjutant.

“We want every veteran and active military in Madison County that do not belong to a veteran organization to join us, the American Legion,” Woods said.
