Board places middle school principals, CO administrator

MADISON – Madison Board of Education has placed new principals at both middle schools and added a Central Office administrator.

Principal Kimberly P. Stewart of Discovery Middle School is advancing from assistant principal, in which she has worked since July 2015. Previously, she was assistant principal at Horizon Elementary School.

Before her Horizon appointment, Stewart taught English and Language Arts at Discovery for 13 years and in a St. Louis middle school. Stewart’s expertise extends to special education, Title 1 tutoring, pupil support teams, screening, hiring, scheduling and professional development.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in biology from St. Louis University, Stewart received a master’s degree in education administration from Grand Canyon University in Arizona.

Stewart fills Eric Terrell’s slot, who was promoted to MCS Assistant Superintendent – Operations.

Shannon Brown is Liberty Middle School’s new principal. He has been working as administrator for Huntsville’s Ninth-Grade Academy.

In his career, Brown has worked as teacher and coach at Bob Jones, Ardmore and Greensboro high schools; Huntsville City Schools as teacher, administrator, athletics director and safety coordinator; McNair Junior High School and Huntsville Center for Technology as assistant principal.

Majoring in education, Brown earned a bachelor’s degree at University of Alabama and master’s degree at Tennessee State University. Brown replaces Nelson Brown, who accepted the position of principal at Athens Renaissance School.

Michael Gunner was named the district’s Coordinator of Operations and Safety, a new slot that absorbs duties of Patrick Conner and Dennis James who recently retired.

Since 2007, Gunner has been assistant principal at Rainbow Elementary School. He formerly taught at Heritage Elementary School. For 16 years, Gunner led Bob Jones Swimming and Diving Team as head coach to 10 state championships.

Before his education career, Gunner was an HVAC professional in Huntsville and Decatur. He earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Athens State University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from University of North Alabama.

Superintendent Robby Parker said Stewart, Brown and Gunner are entering new positions but “are not new to Madison schools. They’re familiar with the culture and high expectations of our school district.”
