Zingarelli named Madison City Attorney

MADISON – At its June 26 meeting, Madison City Council approved the appointment of Megan Zingarelli as Madison City Attorney. She has been serving as acting city attorney in recent months.

In other business, council approved a facilities use agreement with Madison City Volleyball to have a partnership with Dublin Park. The volleyball organization provides the co-ed sports to youth from eight to 18 years old.

In 2015, 119 children participated with Madison City Volleyball, compared to 2017 with an increase to 199, a spokesperson said.

In bill payments, council approved $1,552.50 to J.W. Kennedy & Associates for a site survey for a fueling station; $14,041.04 to Holzheimer Bolek & Meehan for architectural and engineering services for Madison Public Library; and $34,959.17 to Turner Universal for construction management for the library.

On June 26, Madison Mayor Paul Finley joined Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle and Madison County Commission Chairman Dale Strong to sign a proclamation for Armed Forces Celebration Week. One of the week’s events is a free concert by the Army Materiel Command Four Star Band, “A Musical Tribute to America’s Armed Forces,” at James Clemens High School on June 27.

In sessions with residents, Finley met with Alex Riley, who chairs the MadisonUP organization that is working to enrich the area on Gillespie Road at Wall Triana. Also, Finley reminded residents about the city-sponsored 2017 Stars and Stripes Forever July 4th Celebration at Dublin Park.

District 1 Councilwoman Maura Wroblewski has scheduled a town hall meeting at West Madison Elementary School on July 20 at 4 p.m. Also, Wroblewski said anyone interested in an opening with Madison City Disability Advocacy Board can email to maura.wroblewski@madisonal.gov.

Teddy Powell and Greg Shaw, council members for Districts 3 and 4, commended the tireless work of Public Works Department employees. Powell commented on Public Works’ effort for downtown improvements, and Shaw discussed their work with trash collection.

District 6 Councilman Gerald Clark said Madison Beautification and Tree Board held its annual luncheon to recognize winners of Madison Beautification Awards.

District 7 Councilman John Seifert represented council at Elks Flag Day Ceremony in Huntsville.

“The Dizzy Dean baseball tournament will start on June 30 and possibly run through July 5 at Palmer Park. Madison will have five teams participating. Three hotels are completely booked for the tournament,” Seifert said in acknowledging work by Madison Chamber of Commerce.

Council President Tommy Overcash was appointed to Place 1 on North Alabama Gas Board.

In department requests, Madison municipal court will enter an agreement with GovtPortal for online ticket payment processing. Engineering Director Gary Cheyoweth reopened a 2014 resolution for sidewalk construction at CinePlanet 15 movie theater, which opened June 23.

Madison Police Department will submit a 2017 COPS Hiring Grant Application, with 75 percent from federal funding and 25 percent local match.

The legal department appointed Lisa Thomas as administrative official for grass and weed abatement (or public nuisance for overgrown grass and lawns). Legal also will extend an agreement with Republic Services for bulk waste pickup.
