Mullins signs as AP at Bob Jones
MADISON – Demond Mullins has decided to leave Montgomery to serve as Assistant Principal at Bob Jones High School.
“I’ve always been impressed with the accomplishments of Madison City Schools,” Mullins said. “Bob Jones has a reputation of being one of the best high schools in Alabama. The position at Bob Jones is an opportunity for me to grow as a professional and learn from great administrators.”
This summer, Mullins has worked as summer principal at Chisholm Elementary School in Montgomery Public Schools. He was assistant principal at Forest Avenue Academic Magnet Elementary School from 2013-2017.
His resume includes working as head baseball coach at Montgomery Academy and Brewbaker Technology high schools; third- and fourth-grade teacher at Johnson Elementary School; and second-grader teacher at Westwood Elementary School in Tuscaloosa County Schools.
“My teaching philosophy emphasizes student learning. Students deserve the right to have the best educational experience possible,” Mullins said. “As a teacher, it’s my job to maximize all resources to help improve the academic achievement of all students.”
“When teachers understand how students learn best, they are then able to help students reach their full potential during their educational career,” he said.
As a disciplinarian, Mullins strives to be consistent and fair and uses his situational leadership skills when correcting behavior issues. “Each situation is different,” he said. “That’s why it’s important for me to be consistent and fair.”
Mullins would love for all students to earn A’s. However, “each individual need is different from student to student. What’s most important is getting the best out of each student to help maximize their learning potential,” he said.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Alabama A&M University, a master’s degree in educational administration from Alabama State University and Education Specialist credentials in educational leadership from Columbus State University in Georgia.
Mullins pleasantly remembers his fifth-grade teacher, Mr. Flowers, who “truly understood how to get the best out of his students. His interest in his students went beyond the classroom. The pleasantness he used with his students is what I have used throughout my educational career. Showing students you care for them as a person will resonate with them for life.”
His wife Kimberly Posey-Mullins works as a kindergarten teacher. The children are eighth-grader Hailey Mullins, 13; third-grader Kailyn Mullins, 7; four-year-old Macy; and nine-month-old Bryson.
Mullins is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Mayor’s Young Professional Council and Torchbearer Leadership Montgomery/Class VII.
“In my spare time, I enjoyed traveling with my family and umpiring baseball games,” he said.
