Girls ‘rule’ at UAH science, engineering day

HUNTSVILLE – Sorry, boys. You’ll have to wait for your turn.

Girls in third, fourth and fifth grades can attend Girls’ Science & Engineering Day at the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Sept. 23. The Women’s Leadership Council is presenting the event.

The Shelby Center for Science & Technology at UAH will host the sessions from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Adults will supervise and escort the children at all times. Parents are not permitted to escort their daughters.

The girls will attend four workshops, each 40 minutes, dealing with diverse topics from biology and living things, to space and rockets, doctors and nurses, stars and planets, mathematics, physics, experiments and robots.

Activities will include computing, rockets, robotics, raptors, reptiles and extraction of strawberry DNA.

Cost for Girls’ Engineering Day is $20 per girl and includes lunch, all workshop materials, snacks and souvenirs. Cancellations are not refundable. The girls will receive a light box lunch with a turkey and cheese wrap, fruit cup, chips and water. Each girl also will receive a non-peanut granola bar and raisins for snack.

Organizers cannot accommodate specific food preferences. However, parents can contact organizers if their child has a serious food allergy.

Girls attending the event should not bring cameras, backpacks, purses, cell phones, sunglasses and other valuables. Organizers will not be responsible for lost or stolen property. Each girl will receive a souvenir goodie bag with room to carry all of the take-home items from the day.

Registration will open Aug. 23. To register online, visit gseduah.com. Limited space is available for the event. Organizers will consider participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

For more information, call 256-824-6771 or email registration@gseduah.com. In addition, a campus map of UAH is available at uah.edu/map.
