American Legion pavers honor soldiers, military history

MADISON – Members of American Legion, Post 229 in Madison are selling inscribed brick pavers for installation at the new monument in Madison City Veteran Park on Front Street in downtown Madison.

Legionnaires and local officials dedicated the monument on Memorial Day on May 31, 2017.

An organization, a relative, a family or any resident can recognize a veteran, veterans’ organization or military group by purchasing a personalized brick that will be installed along the Legacy Walkway in the veterans’ park. The brick can commemorate any historical period or war.

“To complete our veterans’ park, we are now trying to sell pavers that we will place at the base of the monument,” Post 229 Commander Carlos Woods said. “There are a few bricks that are laid now at the base, and we now want to complete the first phrase of our pavers for the front base. We hope that sales will continue so that we will have a complete walkway.”

Two formats are available. A paver that measures 4-by-8 inches costs $100, and a paver that is 8-by-8 inches costs $200.

To buy a paver, request an application form to record the name and message for inscription. For assistance, call Woods at 256-508-6548 or email woodscarlos12@gmail.com or call Adjutant Larry Vannoy at 256-461-8426 or email lvannoy06@gmail.com. Mail a check or money order with the application to American Legion Post 229, P.O. Box 194, Madison, AL 35758.

American Legion, Post 229 meets the second Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Lunar Lodge Post 918, 740 Eastview Drive in Madison. For more information, call 256-508-6548 or email woodscarlos12@gmail.com.
