Rainbow Math Team earns honors at tourneys

MADISON – The Math Team at Rainbow Elementary School has claimed numerous honors at tournaments staged at sites across the northern half of Alabama.

“Our boys and girls did an amazing job in their first competition of the year at Muscle Shoals Middle School finishing first in their division with fifth- and sixth-graders,” sponsor Katherine Allison said.

Rainbow students who won individual awards for top 10 ranking in their division included these mathematicians:

* Fifth grade — Geon Park, first place; Caleb Chen, second; Katie Nguyen, third; Karsten Wallace, fifth; Sophia Johnson, sixth; Ally Kuang, seventh; Arnav Maskey, eighth; and Jacob Uchitel, ninth.

* Sixth grade — Natalie Nguyen, first; Amy Park, fourth; Meredith Drummond, sixth; and Putri Wasistho, seventh.

Students who also competed at Muscle Shoals were Caroline Wang, Christine Wang, Artem Starenki, Sha Rasool, Zach Thornton, Mona Hong and Julian Porter.

The Rainbow Rockets Math Team earned second place in Division II at Vestavia Hills Math Tournament. Recipients of individual awards were Natalie Nguyen, third place; Amy Park, fifth place; and Katie Nguyen, eighth place.

Other contestants at Vestavia Hills included Caleb Chen, Amy Park, Geon Park, Natalie Nguyen, Katie Nguyen, Zachary Calinsky, Putri Wasistho, Julian Porter, Rachael Ehrman, Myles Hammonds and Jacob Uchitel.

Their remaining schedule of competitions includes Randolph School, Jan. 27; Hayden Middle School, Feb. 10; Hoover High School, March 3; and Berry Middle School, April 7.
