Greenblat to discuss ‘Holocaust Remembrance’ at Global Ties institute

MADISON – “Holocaust Remembrance” will be the message for the Global Perspective Institute, sponsored by Global Ties Alabama or GTA.

At the event, featured speaker Herschel Greenblat will recount memories of his family’s persecution during the Holocaust. Greenblat serves as a speaker for the William Breman Jewish Heritage & Holocaust Museum in Atlanta.

Randolph School, 4915 Garth Road SE in Huntsville is hosting the event on Sept. 5 at 6:30 p.m.

“It is because of my father’s strong will that I, my sister and my mother were able to escape the horror of the Holocaust. I want everyone to remember, and that it never happens again,” Greenblat said.

Greenblat was born in Kremenchuk, Ukraine in 1941. At the time, World War II was raging and Jews living in the Ukraine were targeted mercilessly. His parents fled with him to the Ukraine’s extensive cave system, according to GTA CEO Jacqueline Shipe.

After spending about 10 years in a displaced persons camp, the family moved to America. Greenblat’s tells his family’s story not only to keep alive their memory but also the memory of six million of his fellow Jews who perished.

Global Ties Alabama was founded in 1965 as International Services Council of Alabama. The organization helped international military trainees at Redstone Arsenal feel at home, coordinating multicultural events in the Huntsville area and providing information about immigration and naturalization services to area residents.

The council also hosted international visitors traveling to Alabama under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State with its International Visitor Leadership Program.

For 50-plus years, Global Ties Alabama has facilitated connections to meet the cultural and professional needs of international visitors, governments, companies and other visitors. “As a nonprofit partner of the U.S. Department of State, we sustain a network that coordinates international exchange programs and brings current and future leaders from around the world to communities throughout Alabama,” Shipe said.

“We want the world to know our new Alabama. We would like to give you the chance to serve as a guide to international visitors and invite them into your home for dinner and Southern hospitality,” Shipe said.
