Queen’s Quest Chess Tourney set for Nov. 13 at Midtown

MADISON – The 2021-2022 chess season continues with the next contest on the schedule, the Fall Queen’s Quest Scholastic Chess Tournament.

Lockheed Martin Corporation is sponsoring the event.

The tournament date is Nov. 13 at Midtown Elementary School, 140 Coefer Blvd. in Madison. Players must report to a mandatory players meeting at 9:15 a.m.

“We are excited to host our first over-the-board team and individual tournament on Nov. 13 at Midtown. All sections will be rated, and players will need a U.S. Chess Federation membership in order to play,” Ranae Bartlett said. Bartlett serves as Executive Director of Madison City Chess League.

For Queen’s Quest, rated sections only will be available: K-3 U300; K-3 Championship; K-5 Championship; K-8 Junior High; and K-12 Open. To assign sections, tournament officials will use a player’s official, published rating as of Nov. 1.

Round times will be 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Time control will be Game 30/d5.

Queen’s Quest uses 5 round Swiss, along with USCF rated. All sections must have USCF membership, which players must obtain before registering for this tournament. Players can receive USCF membership online at new.uschess.org/become-member.

Entry fee is $25 per player. “Because this is an individual and team event, the registration fee is the same for all individuals,” Bartlett said.

Deadline for online registration is Nov. 10. Players cannot register onsite at the tournament. A refund will not be issued after the player has been paired.

“This is an individual event, with secondary team prizes; a team is the four highest scorers. Teams may represent a school only. Pairings will be ‘team blind,’” Bartlett said.

For individual awards, the Top 10 individuals will receive trophies for K-3 U300, K-3 Championship, K-5 Championship and K-8 Jr High. In addition, the Top 5 individuals in K-12 Open will earn trophies. Officials will award medals to all individuals whose score ties for a trophy place but loses out on tie‐break.

For team awards, the Top 4 teams will earn trophies in K-3 U300, K-3 Championship and K-5 Championship sections. In addition, the Top 2 teams in K-8 Jr High and Top 2 teams in K-12 Open sections will receive trophies.

USCF rules require all competitors in rated sections to record their moves as they play. All tournaments that MCCL conducts will enforce all USCF rules.
