Arts Huntsville features the work of past Panoply poster artists in new art exhibit

Arts Huntsville features the work of past Panoply poster artists in new art exhibit

HUNTSVILLE Visitors to the Von Braun Center (VBC) will find a literal panoply of artwork on display now through the end of April in the Arts Huntsville Gallery between the VBC Playhouse and Concert Hall. This exhibit, The Art of Panoply: Posters and More features the work of current or former local artists that each earned the distinction of being selected as a poster artist for Panoply, the city’s most popular arts festival of over 40 years. Arts Huntsville installed the exhibit as a prelude to the 2023 festival occurring April 28-30 at Big Spring Park presented by Mazda Toyota Manufacturing.

“Selecting a local artist for the festival’s posters and t-shirts each year is a decades-long tradition,” said Arts Huntsville Executive Director Allison Dillon-Jauken. “After celebrating our 40th festival in 2022, it felt appropriate for 2023 to collectively display the work of some of these artists. We hope the public will enjoy experiencing this Panoply tradition as a singular gallery experience.”

The exhibit features original work displayed next to framed prints of each artist’s respective Panoply poster. The collection spans 30 years, with the earliest exhibiting artist dating to 1992 (Maggie Little). Over a dozen other Panoply poster artists are featured, through 2022 (Sonya Clemmons). 2023’s poster and artist’s work will be added to the exhibit after the unveiling in March.

“The exhibit has been curated with a combination of work on loan from the artists as well as from Arts Huntsville’s private collection,” explained exhibit curator and Public Art Program Manager Jennifer Johnson. “Visitors to this exhibit will be treated to diverse original work by the artists, and in a few cases will enjoy Panoply poster originals.”

The exhibit will be on display through April 30 and features a variety of media including painting, textiles, drawing, and mixed media. Exhibiting artists include Sonya Clemmons, Rickie Higgins, Mary ‘Pat’ Flynn Kyser, Maggie Little, Leslie Lockhart, Jahni Moore, Yuri Ozaki, Gina Percifull, Renee Prasil, Logan Tanner, Chris Wade, Christina Wegman, and Grace Wever. The undisclosed poster artist for 2023 will have artwork added to the exhibit after the poster art is unveiled. The exhibit is installed adjacent to the Arts Huntsville office located at the north end of the Von Braun Center.
