Bob Jones PTSA awards Classroom Grants

MADISON – Three teachers at Bob Jones High School have received a boost for funding their ventures with students as the winners of a Bob Jones PTSA Classroom Grant.

In a helpful tradition, Bob Jones PTSA awards a limited number of grants to the faculty and staff. Recipients can use the grant to help in paying for projects, buying educational resources and solving classroom needs to enhance student learning.

A recipient cannot use a grant for personal gain, such as lodging, transportation, field trips or licensures. Any teacher for grades 9-12 is eligible for applying for this grant.

Mary Davis, who directs productions and teaches drama classes, applied her grant to buy wireless headsets for her award-winning Student Technician Team. The Bob Jones Theatre program can continue to support outstanding shows and host community shows from the Zompa Auditorium stage. Jesse Tilton instructs the technical crew for Patriot Players.

“Our theatre program works hard to help the school, our school system and our community,” Davis said. “We host elementary and middle-school programs, we ‘tech’ all band and chorus concerts, and we produce eight or nine theatre shows a year.”

In science study, Dr. Major Melissa Lacey and her Air Force Junior ROTC Aeronautics team will use their new ViewSonic OMNI Gaming 32-inch monitor for training on flight/drone simulations. They will have learned the basics before actually flying a drone.

“There is a growing interest in flying drones and achieving drone flight certification (licensing),” Lacey said. “I am currently teaching Patriot Path session open to all Bob Jones students in which students can train on the flight/drone sims before flying drones.”

Kathryn Teare’s biology classroom now will have 3D Molecular Design Flow of genetic information kits. With this addition, students can experience hands-on lessons on biology concepts like replication of DNA, protein synthesis and creation of Messenger RNA.

“These kits are a foam manipulative designed to teach multiple concepts in biology,” Teare said. “(DNA/RNA work) is often a very difficult concept for students to grasp and a manipulative model really helps them to grasp the concept. Because the pieces are made of a durable foam, they can be used for many years.”

The Bob Jones 2022-2023 PTSA Executive Board includes Stephenie Walker, President; Claudelle White, Vice President of Membership; Kandie Tate, Vice President of Volunteers; Melissa Davison, Treasurer; and LeAnne Letize McGee, Secretary.
