School nurses benefit from Lions Club’s actions

MADISON – A recent project by Madison Area Family Lions Club is providing school nurses with essential materials for treating students who need medical attention.

Club members (or ‘Lions’) conducted their service event on July 29 at Walmart Neighborhood Market, 7140 Wall Triana. The Lions collected supplies for nurses, along with distributing information on the Lions organization and giving away two tickets to a Trash Panda baseball game.

“During this event, we collected approximately 15 cubic feet (three large moving boxes) of supplies that we’ll distribute to school nurses supporting the area near the Wall Triana Walmart,” Lions Club Vice President Tony Villamil said.

These supplies ranged from baby wipes to Ziploc bags to bandages and will help restock day-to-day supplies for the nurses, Villamil said.

In addition, the club collected $275 in donations, which they plan to donate to local schools, Lions Club President Cheryl Emich said. “This is our second year of hosting the collection event at this Walmart, and we want to thank the people of the Harvest, Monrovia and Madison communities for their generous support. We will be donating these funds back to the local community.”

Madison Area Family Lions Club supports many programs in local communities. These efforts include “providing eye exams and eyeglasses to children in Madison City Schools, recycling used eyeglasses, conducting eye screening events and sponsoring children to Huntsville Camp Seale Harris,” Emich said.

“We are expanding our efforts in the local area and hope more people will see that they can help their fellow citizens in a variety of ways; one of them is through their local Lions Club,” Emich said. “We hope they will consider joining the largest service organization in the world — the Lions Club International.”

The club also gave away two tickets to an upcoming Trash Pandas baseball game. The winner was Wyatt Jackson, an employee at the local Walmart, “who helped to ensure our event was a success and returned many brochures and flyers that were left in shopping carts,” Villamil said.

Madison Area Family Lions Club is always looking for new members who want to serve their community. The club meets monthly on second Tuesdays at Dublin Park, Meeting Room A in Madison. Lions clubs are recognized service organizations that identify needs within their community and work together to fulfill those needs.
