‘Light the World Giving Machine’ to accept donations for those in need

Anyone can donate much-needed items, such as clothing, food, hygiene products, school supplies... and even livestock to those in need.

HUNTSVILLE – An ingenious breakthrough in outreach will open at Bridge Street Town Centre on Nov. 14 with the “Light the World Giving Machine.”

A ribbon cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. will officially open the Giving Machine. The phenomenon will remain in operation through Dec. 2.

“The Giving Machine is a vending machine that works in reverse. In the time it takes to swipe a credit card, anyone can donate much-needed items, such as clothing, food, hygiene products, school supplies…and even livestock to those in need,” Ed Aycock said. Aycock serves as Assistant Communication Director for the Madison Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Bridge Street Town Centre will have three of these bright red machines in operation. “Anyone can ‘vend’ joy to local charities, along with charities around the world,” Aycock said.

Huntsville is one of more than 130 cities worldwide to host the Giving Machine this holiday season.

Participating local charities include First Stop, Free 2 Teach, ENABLE Madison County, Kids to Love and the Expect Little Miracles or ELM Foundation.

The Giving Machine “makes it easy for people to help others in need. You literally ‘buy’ items, like meals and blankets, from a vending machine to bless families across the world and right here locally,” Charity Stratton said. Stratton serves as Communication Director of the Madison Stake of the LDS Church.

Established in 2017, the Giving Machine started as part of the “Light the World” initiative by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints. “The Church covers operational expenses, so 100 percent of every donation is given to the participating nonprofits to purchase and deliver the selected items,” Aycock said.

Organizers are inviting the public to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony on Nov. 14 (at Bridge Street in front of the store, It’s Sugar). Special guests will include Tommy Battle, Huntsville Mayor; Jennie Robinson, Huntsville City Council Chairperson; John Meredith (TBD), Huntsville City Councilman; Ryan Ginty, Bridge Street General Manager; Mike Nelson, Giving Machine City Lead; and other local leaders.
