Teacher, coach, now Mayor Kent Chambers

MADISON – “I am honored and humbled to be your next Mayor of Eva.” Kent Chambers made his statement immediately after being voted the new Mayor of the town of Eva located in Morgan County with a population of around 600. In the recent election, the 61-year old captured 58-percent of the vote and now will split his duties as Mayor and longtime teacher at Bob Jones High.

Chambers in his 40th year as educator at Bob Jones, a position he took straight out of college after earning his degree in Secondary Education from Athens State University. Since his arrival at Madison’s first high school, he has taught numerous classes in math, has been athletic director and was also a coach in the school’s athletic program until 2016 when he gave up his position as head coach of the Patriots’ softball team. He has remained with the softball team unofficially as a coach and is the bus driver for the squad on the team’s away games.

Upon his position as Council Place 1 in Eva for several years in the town incorporated in 1963, he was asked to run for Mayor after the reining sitting Mayor decided to retire. Chambers was sworn in as new Mayor on Nov. 3. He stated, “I greatly appreciate everyone who supported me and voted for me. I promise to work diligently for every citizen of our wonderful town. We all want what is best for Eva.”

Chambers is now busily tending to his work as Mayor and continues to teach at the school where he has coached volleyball, basketball, swimming and softball. His plans are do both jobs until the end of the current 2025-2026 school year and at that time make a decision for his future.

“If I cannot handle both positions, then I would step away from teaching at that point as the Mayor position would come first,” said Chambers.
