Bob Jones basketball teams open regular season with wins

Girls:  Bob Jones 76 Grissom 12

The defending Class 6A state champion Bob Jones girls opened the regular season Tuesday against visiting Grissom. The Lady Patriots cruised to a convincing 76-12 victory. The win runs their record to 4-0 after winning three games in the Bob Jones Tip off Tournament last weekend.

Two players, Joiden Jennings and Tierra Jones, had a full day of excitement as they each signed scholarship papers earlier in the day to play basketball in college.

Jennings, a point guard signed with UNA and Ones a forward signed with Tulane.

Both ladies along with the rest of the starting lineup had a short night of work as Bob Jones roared to a big lead early and the starters rested the entire second half.

Center Jasmine Jones, who signed with Tennessee last week and China Leary each, had seven points and Jones had three blocked shots as the Patriots held a 19-0 lead after one quarter. Grissom managed 2 points in the second quarter but still trailed 47-2 as the half.

DeAsia Campbell had the hot hand in the first half with 10 points, most from long range.

Chandler Elder came off the bench to lead the team with 11 points, most in the second half when Bob Jones built a lead as big as 74-8. Elder nailed two three-point shots down the stretch for a final score of 76-12.

The competition will get tougher as Hazel Green visits on Friday night. After the Thanksgiving break the Lady Patriots travel to Hoover to face the top ranked team in the state.

Bob Jones will not play an area game until December at Austin High in Decatur.

Boys:  Bob Jones 62 Grissom 34

Madison- The Bob Jones boys opened the season with a strong effort from several football players who had practiced with the basketball team only 2 days. Reggie Ragland scored the first points of the season for Bob Jones and Kevin Wright and Tyler Davis each nailed three-pointers to stake the Patriots to an early lead. Bob Jones led 14-9 after one quarter and 31-15 at the half.

After a slow start, Jeffrey Moss heated up and scored nine points in the game. Earlier in the day he sealed his college basketball scholarship by signing with Murray State.

Ragland was the team’s leading scorer with 17. Nobody on Grissom was in double figures. Tyler Davis scored 13 as Bob Jones held a 48-23 lead after three quarters and finished off Grissom 62-34.

On offense Bob Jones played very well and had only 1 turnover in the first half and only 4 for the whole game. Defensively they outrebounded by Grissom by only one, 32-31.

“It was a good start for us considering we had only had the football players for two practices,” head coach Danny Petty said.
