Road Woes for Bob Jones, Patriots hammered by Gadsden City

GADSDEN- Gadsden City put an emphatic end to Bob Jones’ two week stay as the No. 1 team in 7A. The Titans hammered Bob Jones 44-23 Friday night. It was the worst loss in two years going back to a 42-14 loss to Hazel Green in 2012.
The offense struggled all game for Bob Jones. Quarterback Jeremy Frye misfired on several passes early. In the first half he completed 5 of 14 passes for 53 yards. He threw 3 interceptions in the game.
Dropped passes by receivers hampered the offense from getting any rhythm going as Gadsden City dominated time of possession with their run game.
Gadsden City had two running backs gain over 100 yards. Gabe Ford had 109 yards. Damon Williams had 101 including two touchdowns runs.
“I couldn’t really put my finger on one thing that cost us the game, but obviously they won the kicking game,” said Bob Jones Head Coach Kevin Rose. “We really got beat in all phases of the game on the road by a really good football team.”
Bob Jones fell behind early 6-0 after Gadsden City blocked Mike Bernier’s punt and the Titan offense punched it in from the one.
Bob Jones tried a fake punt that was run for a first down by Deondre Douglas. Douglas got Bob Jones first touchdown on a 20-yard pass from Frye. Glassman’s extra point attempt was blocked.
The first half ended with an A.J. Harris interception. On his run back, he was tackled just short of the end zone. For Harris it was his second interception of the season.
Gadsden led 16-13 at the half.
Early in the second half Gadsden City’s Darnell Mooney returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown and Gadsden City grabbed a 23-13 lead. The Titans extended the lead to 30-13 after a drive and 5-yard touchdown run by Damon Williams.
“I’m sure some people will call it an upset but our kids fully expected to win that game, so they were not surprised about it,” said Gadsden City Coach Matt Scott.
Gadsden City is now 5-0 and 3-0 in Class 7A Area 4. Bob Jones is 3-1, 2-1 in Area 4.
