MADISON – Tommy Whitten has entered the race for the District 7 seat on Madison City Council.

Whitten intends “to work hard to keep the City of Madison financially strong in order to protect a high quality of life for the residents of Madison.”

“I believe in the managed growth of the city to include the recruiting of new businesses while actively supporting the enterprises that are already located in the city,” he said.

Whitten said he plans “on working with the other council members and the city administration to seek out revenue streams to fund Madison’s existing infrastructure and to promote additional improvements to the city’s services.”

A veteran of Desert Storm, Whitten retired as Lieutenant Colonel in the Alabama National Guard after 30 years in the military. During his service, he earned the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.

At the University of North Alabama, Whitten earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in business administration. He has worked with Madison County Schools for 24 years; he now serves as District Technology Coordinator.

His wife Paula retired from Madison City Schools after 30 years in public education. Paula Whitten continues to teach at St. John the Baptist Catholic School.

The Whittens have lived in Madison since 1984. Tommy has been an active volunteer with youth sports and Boy Scouts.

Their son Thomas, an Eagle Scout, graduated from Bob Jones High School and the University of North Alabama and now works in Nashville, Tenn. Thomas and wife Natalie have two daughters, Kennedy and Audrey.

Tommy Whitten received the respected Marbury Technology Innovation Award from the Alabama Department of Education. He also earned the “Making IT Happen” award from the International Society of Technology in Education.

In addition, Whitten is one of the first professionals in Alabama to receive the Certified Education Technology Leader certification issued by the Consortium of School Networking.

Whitten is an active member of Alabama Educational Technology Association, Consortium of School Networking and International Society of Technology in Education.
