MADISON – Many individual and ensemble acts from Bob Jones High School and their one-act play, “A Resonant Frequency,” have qualified for the state-level Walter J. Trumbauer Drama Festival.
Bob Jones competed in the district festival of Alabama Conference of Theatre on Nov. 5 at Lee High School in Huntsville.
At the district contest, “A Resonant Frequency” won “Best Costumes,” “Best Ensemble,” “Best Tech Crew” and “Best Supporting Actress” awards.
Drama teacher Dwayne Craft wrote “A Resonant Frequency” with collaboration from drama teacher Mary Davis and their students. “The play is an exploration of the human side of the inventor Nikola Tesla. It’s really a tale of someone choosing to serve the greater good as opposed to serving their own interests,” Craft said.
“Tesla could have been the Bill Gates of his generation, but he gave up his patents on AC motors to keep George Westinghouse’s company solvent,” Craft said.
“Mary Davis worked herself to the bone directing a lot of the action on stage, while I worked more on writing and tech,” Craft said.
Actors named to “All-Star Cast” are seniors Seth Slaton, Maggie Moore, Olivia Carroll and Kamron Sanderfer.
“Our student costumers are being taught by one of the most talented costumers I’ve ever met. Shari Kingsford spends endless hours training the student costumers in their craft, and it shows when the product walks out on stage,” Craft said.
Best supporting actress Addison McAbee is naturally talented and simply owns the stage, Craft said. “She has presence, charisma and talent beyond her years. I wouldn’t normally expect a freshman to garner the award in such a tough district, but she is super talented and very dedicated.”
Bob Jones tech crew worked “later and harder than anyone on the entire production team,” Craft said. “They’re always willing to try out something different and experiment with a lighting, set, prop, sound technique.”
Patriot Players will present “A Resonant Frequency” during school on Nov. 22. Student tickets will be sold in class.
About 150 Bob Jones students will attend Walter J. Trumbauer Drama Festival on Dec. 2-3 at the University of North Alabama.
“I’m so grateful for the partnership I have with Dwayne Craft. Together, we have the blessing of working with some incredible kids,” Davis said.
