Sparkman’s Malik Tyson Making Statement On Basketball Court

HARVEST- Malik Tyson is making a statement as the Sparkman High senior is having a spectacular season for the Senators’ basketball team, which is ranked among the top 10 in Class 7A. The gifted shooter is averaging 21 points, 7 rebounds and is shooting 86-percent of his free throws per outing leading the squad that’s in quest of a return to the State Tournament.

“My goal is to help this team get back to the State Tourney, plus I have some personal goals I have set,” said Tyson.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound forward looks more like a linebacker for a football team. He’s looking to continue his impressive ways in an attempt to gain a scholarship offer from a Div. I school. Currently, he carries a 3.7 grade point average in the classroom and his shining play on the court has caused schools from all divisions to reach out to the lone remaining starter from last year’s team that made it to the Final Four.

Tyson has had looks from several Div. I programs including Troy, Ole Miss and Marshall. Tyson said many Div. II schools and JUCO teams have contacted him impressed with his senior leadership, court savvy and scoring skills.

“I’m not turning down anything at this point as it’s a scholarship and you get to go to college for free,” said Tyson. “My goal is to go Div. 1 and play. If that doesn’t happen at first, I can also go JUCO and my dreams can always live on.”

Tyson is expected to make his scholarship decision sometime in March. Additional schools to show interest in the Senator leader are Furman, Samford, Alabama A&M and Georgia Southern.

In the recent Huntsville City Classic holiday tournament Tyson was named All-Tournament by posting 96 points in four games including two 30-point games.

Tyson’s on court leadership, calm demeanor during close games and key plays and his energy level to make things happens for the fifth-ranked Senators is speaking volumes for anyone who will listen to his statement.
