Madison grew by 25.29% in ten years; Huntsville now largest city in state

They have been saying it was likely to happen this year and it did. Huntsville is now the largest city in Alabama. According to data from the 2020 U.S. Census released Thursday, Huntsville’s is up from 180,105 in the 2010 Census to 215,006. Birmingham is now the second largest city in Alabama at 200,733. They fell from a population of 212,237 in 2010.
Huntsville has added 56,790 people within the past 20 years. Madison has added 24,468.

With a 2020 population of 53,797, Madison is now the 10th largest city in Alabama. The city is currently growing at a rate of 2.09% annually and its population has increased by 25.29% since the most recent census, which recorded a population of 42,938 in 2010.

Madison County’s population is 388,153, and Limestone County is at 103,570.

The State of Alabama population came in at 5,024,279, a 5.1% increase in the last decade. Alabama is now the 24th most populous state in the U.S. In April 2021, the U.S. Census Bureau confirmed Alabama will not lose a seat in the House of Representatives based upon numbers released in 2020 Census apportionment data. This means Alabama will retain its seven congressional seats.

Huntsville city leaders did say that the increase in population will mean redistricting is in the city’s future. The Huntsville City Council on Thursday approved its 2021 redistricting guidelines to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act and U.S. Constitution.

Mayor Tommy Battle was not surprised by the census findings. “The numbers released today by the Census Bureau validate predictions we’ve heard for a while,” he said.

Madison has not announced if they will be required to redistrict due to the 2020 Census numbers.
