Mustangs gallop past Indians in road test

ATHENS — The Madison Academy boys basketball team (13-2) dominated East Limestone (7-3) in a road clash on Friday night 66-49.

One player who made an important contribution at a key moment was the junior JC Shulman who ended up with 10 points in the game.

The Mustangs were up 22-16 late in the second quarter and East Limestone was threatening to climb back into the contest after falling behind early.

That was when the ball found Shulman at the top of the key and he let a 3-point shot fly with 55 seconds to play before the first half.

Shulman’s shot tore through the net with a swish that made it 25-16 Mustangs.

With just 31.5 remaining in the second quarter, Shulman made a move to shake an Indian defender at the top of the key and the junior hit another clutch 3-point shot and he drew a foul.

Shulman fell backward and hit the court with a face of utter glee as he celebrated being fouled with a yell to the rafters.

“That gave us some separation,” Madison Academy head coach Tom Berryman said.

“We kind of got a big lead early and they kept chipping away in the second quarter. We weren’t playing really well offensively, but their defense had a lot to do with that. That sequence right there, I think they had cut it to maybe six or seven, JC hitting back to back 3’s really allowed us to get a little bit of separation going into the half.

The Mustang junior stepped to the foul line and made that shot as well to make it 29-16 with time running out in the second quarter.
