Spears not running for re-election, Bier to plans to run in district 2

MADISON – District 2 Madison City Council member Connie Spears announced last week she is not seeking reelection this year. Elected in 2020, she is wrapping up her first term in the position. Municipal elections will be held in August.

“Over the past 4+ years, we have accomplished many wonderful things for the city of Madison,” Spears said in a Facebook post last Monday night. “We have great schools, strong economic development and responsible growth. I am proud of the small role I played in these accomplishments; however, there are other pursuits to which I would like to apply my talents and knowledge.”

In her statement, Spears said she is looking forward to serving the community in a greater role in the future, but did not specify what that role will be.

“Madison is my home, and I will always work for its success and growth,” she said. “I would like to thank the voters of District 2 for electing me to serve them” Prior to being elected to the city council, Spears retired from the Madison City Schools Board of Education after being appointed in 2009 and serving for 10 years.

Not wasting any time after Spears’ announcement, business leader David Bier announced his candidacy to fill the district 2 position in the upcoming municipal election.

“I am excited to announce my candidacy for Madison City Council,” Bier stated. “Madison is unlike any other place in our state, or even the country. Within our city, we have some of the best schools in the nation, thriving greenways, and parks that encourage outdoor enjoyment. My vision is to protect and strengthen this amazing gem of a city, while promoting smart and reasoned economic growth.”

A chief operating officer of a local company, David Bier’s campaign said his career spans entrepreneurship, corporate leadership, and public service, giving him a unique perspective on economic growth, strategic planning, and community development.

“I believe my lifelong commitment to leadership, fiscal responsibility, and community driven solutions fuels my vision for Madison’s future—ensuring it remains a thriving, well-planned city that balances growth with quality of life for families, businesses, and future generations,” Bier added. “Through thoughtful planning, collaboration, and a steadfast commitment to our identity, we can preserve the uniqueness that makes Madison such a special place to live.”

As a member of the Committee of 100, Bier has been involved in the community while fostering strategic partnerships that strengthen Madison’s future. He has also led a business roundtable through Studer Community Institute and mentored entrepreneurs through the Spring MIT Venture Mentoring Services Program.

“My core values drive me to confront difficult decisions and tackle problems head-on,” Bier said. “When our city faces challenges, I promise to do what comes naturally to me: bring people with diverse opinions together, address the hard issues, explore opportunities, and always find a path forward.”

Bier and his wife, Jennifer, live in Madison where they raised their two sons, Ryan and Matthew. A dedicated community leader, he has been actively involved as a Scouting volunteer, baseball coach, and Faith Factory teacher at The Brook Church.

Bier’s official kickoff campaign will take place this spring.

The Municipal Election will be held on August 26.
