Blue Apple Book sessions range from history to social media to gaming

MADISON – Sessions on history, gaming and correspondence in social media are scheduled at Blue Apple Books.

“Huntsville author Dallas C. Terrell will announce the release of two books in a series inspired by the best-selling non-fiction book, ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin, or Life Among the Lowly,’ written by Harriet Beecher Stowe,” Blue Apple owner Robin Dauma said.

Terrell’s new books are “Who Kidnapped Uncle Tom and Why it Matters” and “Meditations from the Cabin.”

Terrell’s session at Blue Apple on July 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. will include a meet-and-greet time and book signing. In addition, his brief ‘author talk’ at approximately 4 p.m. will review his books and the processes that created these works.

For his books, Terrell exerted meticulous research with practical wisdom. The devolution of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s central character, Uncle Tom, and its effect upon the shaping of post-civil war social and political culture, according to Terrell, share uncanny similarities to contemporary scenarios.

Another event at Blue Apple Books will focus on the latest craze in board games. Mahjong was developed in China in the mid-1800s and first popularized in the 1920s in America.

“One of our customers, local educator Bree Beckwith, has taught classes in the Birmingham area and expressed interest in teaching classes after several people approached her,” Dauma said. “We are thrilled to partner with Bree to make that happen.”

“You can register as a group of four, a pair or by yourself — whatever works best for you. No prior experience necessary, and we’ll provide all supplies,” Dauma said.

On July 20, an introductory level class for mahjong will meet from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by an intermediate level class from 7 to 9 p.m. The $50 class fee includes instruction by an experienced Mahjong enthusiast and live game play with other class participants during/after instruction at either introductory or intermediate level.

Guests also can enjoy charcuterie snacks and a cocktail/ mocktail. South & Pine or Blue Apple Books will give 10-percent discount on any purchases.

On July 22 from 6 to 7 p.m., Dwaynia Wilkerson will share strategies about effectively reaching an online audience. “Social media platforms present an equal playing field for everyone with a message to share. There has to be a method to your posting madness,” Wilkerson said.

Each platform has a different audience with different expectations. Wilkerson’s session, “Writing for Social Media,” will help participants to better understand the ways to deliver a message that meets those expectations.

Participants will gain insight into LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook, along with understanding the nuances of each platform’s audience. She will discuss tools to tailor any message.

Wilkerson taught English for 11 years at a local university. “In 2016, I traded my grade book and dry-erase markers for laptops and coffee shops. That was the start of Prose & Pens, a brand messaging and content writing service,” she said.

Since then, Wilkerson’s work has been seen on Ulta and Amazon websites, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), POPSUGAR and Good Morning America.

Blue Apple Books’ address is 14 Main St., Suites B and C. For more information, email contact@shopsouthandpine.com.
