LDS Church members give FamilySearch training at Madison Senior Center

MADISON – A couple of local members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are providing FamilySearch training weekly at Madison Senior Center, 1329 Browns Ferry Road in Madison.

“Since opening its doors at a new location in January 2025, the Madison Senior Center has quickly become a vibrant hub for residents aged 50 and older. From stained glass art to bowling leagues, estate planning to travel clubs, the center has something for everyone,” Jane Robinson said. Robinson serves as LDS Stake Communication Specialist.

“But one offering in particular is helping seniors make meaningful connections — not just with each other, but with their own roots,” Robinson said.

“Among the many engaging activities, family history research has emerged as a surprising favorite at Madison Senior Center, thanks to two dedicated volunteers, Diana Shafer and Susan Mathias,” Robinson said. “Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Diana and Susan were trained through the Church’s renowned FamilySearch program.”

FamilySearch is a free and powerful genealogy tool open to everyone. With access to billions of records and a space to store treasured family photos and memories, FamilySearch is like a time machine powered by love and curiosity, she said.

These two family-history enthusiasts are sharing their knowledge and passion with others in the community. On Mondays from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m., they lead a free, family- history class at Madison Senior Center. “Whether you’re a total beginner or have already traced your roots back to the Mayflower, all are welcome to come explore their heritage, swap stories and discover meaningful connections,” Robinson said.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has long encouraged its members to preserve family history as a way to honor those who came before. That spirit of service is now enriching lives throughout Madison.

“If you’re curious about your ancestors, want to preserve family memories or just enjoy a good story, stop by on a Monday afternoon. You might walk in as a stranger, but you’ll leave feeling more connected than ever,” Robinson said.
