Senior center to host AARP driver safety class

Madison Senior Center will offer AARP driver safety classes in February.

“The class will be taught on Feb. 19 and 26 from noon to 3 p.m.,” center activities coordinator Joy Edwards said. Participants must attend both sessions.

The class is limited to 25 people.

“The class is open to anyone and will provide safety strategies for seniors to help them keep driving,” Edwards said. “Persons who complete the class will receive a certificate that may qualify them for a discount on their automobile insurance.”

The class fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for other individuals.

“Make your reservation now,” Edwards said. To reserve a seat, call 256-772-6242.

Madison Senior Center is located at 1282 Hughes Road, adjacent to Discovery Middle School. The center offers daily fellowship, educational programs and recreational activities for senior adults who are 60 years old or older. The center’s bus, “The Senior Cruiser,” provides transportation to members who live within the city limits of Madison.

The center also offers lunch to its members and operates a homebound meal program. Currently, the center is recruiting volunteers to deliver homebound meals, interim director Vickie Parker said.

Volunteers for homebound meals must provide their own transportation and donate about 1.5 hours on one day each month. Volunteers arrive at the center at 11:15 a.m. to pick up meals and start the two routes. “We operate using the ‘buddy system’ where no one goes on the route alone,” Parker said.

On Jan. 23, Madison County Sheriff’s Department employees will visit from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the Yellow Dot program, which provides emergency medical and photo IDs.

On Jan. 24, the medical team on the Big Green Bus from Huntsville Hospital will perform health screenings from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
