Stand Up Chuck poised for gazebo on June 20

MADISON – Stand Up Chuck promises to have the crowd standing in the (grassy) aisles at the Madison Gazebo Concert on June 20.

Sponsored by Madison Arts Council (MAC), the concert runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the gazebo on the Village Green downtown on Front Street.

Stand Up Chuck’s plays contemporary and classic rock charts, along with pounding out the blues. Their music leans heavy to rock with charts like John Mellencamp’s “Rain on the Scarecrow,” Tom Petty’s “Breakdown” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” Pink Floyd’s “Breathe” and “Comfortably Numb” and INXS’ “Never Tear Us Apart.”

The audience can expect a taste of The Beatles and Chicago, along with some heavy metal of Iron Maiden and Van Halen. Stand Up Chuck may even work in some upbeat pop from Billy Joel and Elton John.

“They’re classic rock tunes that will always be around and fun to play,” bass guitarist Chris Howard said. “Everyone knows them.”

Along with Howard, band members are Adam Lones on lead and rhythm guitar and backup vocals; Jeff Williams, keyboard and vocals; Jonn Grochowalski, lead and rhythm guitar; and Steve Sanders, drums/percussion and vocals. The band organized in September 2011.

Their paths crossed to form the band from playing together in other bands, auditioning for Java Junkees and friends … even ads on craigslist.com.

In recent months, Stand Up Chuck frequently has played for Bandito Burrito in downtown Madison, along with private parties and other club gigs.

Joe Biden can be credited for the band’s name. “Vice president Biden told Missouri state senator Chuck Graham to, ‘Stand up.’ Graham is a paraplegic,” Howard said. Stand Up Chuck also summons the comic anti-hero Charlie Brown, who continuously falls after attempting a kick at the football but stands back up.

Band members agree that music is a skill that stays with anyone throughout the years.

At the concert, MAC has arranged for food vendors. Children can have a try at a face painting.
