Military-connected students at Mill Creek honored in special ceremony
April is the “Month of the Military Child”. To honor the families who are serving our nation, the ceremony Tuesday was a way to recognize the military children and the unique challenges they face.
The James Clemens Army JROTC led a special flag ceremony. They then retired old American flags and presented a history of the American flag. Mill Creek students were then given an opportunity to ask the JROTC students questions. They varied from: “Why is the Flag shaped like it is?” to: “Who decided we should even have a Flag?” After learning some Fun Flag Facts, Mill Creek Elementary students were presented with a certificate of appreciation for their Service.
“Military children live with on-going challenges presented by frequent family moves, family separations and life transitions. They move six to nine times during their K-12 years. In their own way, military-connected children serve too,” said Melissa Butler, who is the sponsor for the Elementary Student-to-Student organization at Mill Creek and Heritage schools.
Most of the Madison City schools have S2S ambassadors who volunteer their time and talents to welcome new students, especially those who are connected to the military. It helps the students adjust to a new school environment.
“Most every school district in America includes military-connected children and youth whose parents serve or served in the active, guard, and reserve components of the Armed Forces,” Butler said. “Tuesday was a special moment to recognize and appreciate these children for their service and sacrifice.”
