Bob Jones edges Hamilton for title in 7-on-7 tourney

Bob Jones defenders try to break up a pass intended for a J.O. Johnson receiver Thursday morning in the Elite 7-on-7 tournament at Bob Jones High School. The Patriots won the title with a 29-28 victory over Hamilton.

Bob Jones’ football team came away with a lot more than the championship in the Elite 7-on-7 tournament on the Patriots’ practice fields last week.
With a late cancellation by Muscle Shoals, Bob Jones had three teams entered in the two-day tournament and gained plenty of wins and even more experience.
The Patriots held off Hamilton 29-28 in the championship game on the final day of the tournament Friday.
Hamilton came out of pool play Thursday undefeated and reached the championship game with some strong play in the final elimination rounds a day later.
The Aggies came up short in the championship when Bob Jones ended a late drive with an interception.
Austin finished third in the tournament, while the Sparkman Senators finished fourth.
Also participating in the Elite 7-on-7 tournament were Buckhorn, Grissom, Hayden, Hazel Green and J.O. Johnson.
Both Hamilton and Bob Jones qualified for the National Select 7-on-7 tournament to be held in Hoover later this summer.
Bob Jones is coming off one of its most successful seasons in school history, winning 11 of 13 games on the way to an appearance in the third round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Class 6A playoffs.
The Patriots scored a school-record 474 points and their two losses (Homewood and Hoover) were by a combined total of just 12 points.
Bob Jones will face a tough challenge this fall with a schedule that features North Gwinnett High School in the opening game of the season in the National Progressive Challenge in Atlanta.
The Patriots will also face defending Class 6A state champion Hoover in the final week of the regular season.
Bob Jones will also have a non-region game during the fifth week of the season in Birmingham.
Bob Jones will host the Madison Bowl the week before the opening of the regular season with a preseason game against Fairhope.
The Aug. 19th scrimmage game at Madison City Schools Stadium will have a 7 p.m. start.
