Mustangs route Randolph for Class 3A Area 14 girls title

Madison Academy vs. Randolph

Halie Loney plays defense during the Mustangs' 74-29 victory over Randolph for the Class 3A Area 14 championship.

The Madison Academy Lady Mustangs opened an early 22-7 lead over Randolph in the Class 3A Area 14 championship Saturday and never looked back en route to a dominating 74-29 victory.

“We knew coming into the playoffs that we had a seven game season, and this is two down,” said Madison Academy head coach Brian Privett. “We have an experienced group of girls that know how to go down this road.

“Every game from here on out is an elimination game,” he added.

KeKe Fletcher, Nyla Johnson and Amara Mayers each scored in double digits for the Mustangs and each player was named to the All-Tournament team, but it was Halie Loney who caught the praise of Privett.

“Halie Loney is the epitome of workmanship,” Privett said. “She’s taken a backseat to everyone else’s spotlight, but she’s really stepped up for us and she’ willing to do whatever it takes.”

Loney finished with seven points, seven assists and six steals.

Fletcher finished with a game-high 17 points, followed by Johnson with 16 points and six rebounds and Mayers with 14 points.

Lydia McGee, who was also named to the All-Tournament team, finished with seven points.

For Randolph, Laura Van Peursem had a team-high nine points, while Maggie Buell finished with seven.

The Mustangs will play in the sub-regional Feb. 17-18.
