Bob Jones student wins spot in international calendar

Bob Jones student Michael Delp has the honor of being featured in a calendar put out by Siemens.

The Siemens Product Lifecycle Management Calendar Contest is a monthly competition.  Students from around the world submit their designs for a Solid Edge model, which is “an industry-leading mechanical design system with exceptional tools for creating and managing 3D digital prototypes,” according to the Siemens website.

Though popular images for the design include sports cars or fighter planes, Delp was inspired by an object sitting in his own garage – a 10 inch miter saw.

“I decided to design it because it is fairly complex, and I wanted to be able to take direct measurements off of the object I selected.”

Delp said he has been asked how he created the shadows and reflections in the image.  He said the Solid Edge software makes the task simple.

“To create the shadows I had to position lights in virtual space until I liked the way the shadows fell when I rendered the final image.”

Delp’s design was a CAD, or Computer Aided Design.  It is a file of a 3D object in virtual space, said Delp.

“It is used heavily in the Huntsville are because of all the aerospace companies,” Delp said.

Delp, who spent two weeks designing with the saw “sitting in my bedroom floor,” said he is honored to be the first high school student to win the contest.

“I am very excited, since close to all submissions are made at the university level.”

Delp would like to thank his engineering teacher at Bob Jones, Jeremy Raper, for teaching him the Solid Edge program and telling the class about the contest.
