Madison City Schools teams earn 24 math trophies

Math teams from Madison City Schools again represented their hometown well at the 2012 Pizitz Middle School Math Competition in Birmingham.

Approximately 1,000 students attended the contest from about 60 schools. Madison schools at the Pizitz meet were Columbia, Heritage, Mill Creek and Rainbow elementary schools and Discovery and Liberty middle schools.

Rainbow ranked as the first-place team in Division 2. Earning Individual awards were Joe Shen and Aditi Limaye. Shen and Limaye tied for first place with perfect scores and completed an additional tiebreaker.

Also from Rainbow, Corey Tolbert took third place; Tony Tian, fifth; and Alan Grissom, tenth.

Heritage finished in fourth place for Division 2 teams. Cheng Zhou took fourth place, and Chenny Yoon was ninth in individual awards.

Competing in Division 3, Columbia had the first-place team. Individually, Zain Sultan placed fourth; Sharath Narayan, fifth; and Gautham Gorti, ninth.

Also in Division 3, Mill Creek earned third place in team competition. Alfred Alwin placed first in individual rankings, and Karthik Paladugula placed second.

Seventh-graders from Discovery had the second-place team in Division 1. Winston Van placed sixth in individual competition.

Liberty seventh-graders ranked fourth in team contests in Division 1. Joey Li placed second.

Eighth-graders from Liberty took second-place honors in Division 1. Vinootna Kantety ranked at sixth place individually, along with Kevin Duan at eighth place and Pratheek Bobba, ninth.
