Vote TODAY for Discovery in Act Out Loud contest

“Vote today.” That’s the message for helping Discovery Middle School to win $10,000 in the Act Out Loud contest.

Anyone can vote until midnight to help the poster submitted by Discovery to win. Visit facebook.com/ActOutLoud and click “Like” for the Discovery entry. The deadline to vote is March 27 at midnight.

Act Out Loud is affiliated with National Youth Traffic Safety Month (actoutloud.org). Car crashes are the no. 1 cause of death and injuries for American teenagers, and contest organizers hope to change these statistics by raising awareness to dangers of distracted driving.

Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) at Discovery coordinated the effort and encouraged students to submit artwork entries.

From the original round of competition, Discovery qualified for the Top 25. Round Two will be similar to the first round, with the top 25 posted on the Facebook/Act Out Loud page.

“For this round, we had to create a sign encouraging teens to limit the number of passengers,” in a vehicle, Discovery language arts teacher Sherri Shamwell said.

The school that wins Act Out Loud will receive $10,000. “Please tell all your friends and family to vote,” English teacher Patty Collier said. “Thank you for helping us help our school and send out a valuable message at the same time” for safe driving.

The Top 25 schools that qualified range across the United States — from New Jersey to California. Discovery is the only school from Alabama in the contest.

“The Act Out Loud contest is about getting the word out to youth about the dangers of distracted driving and is meant to help save lives,” national campaign manager Julie Kettner said.
