Smashburger opens only Alabama location in Madison

The restaurant catered its menu to meet Alabama’s taste buds.

Smashburger, a “better burger” restaurant chain, has opened its only Alabama location in Madison.

The popular eatery opened Tuesday, July 3 in The Village Shoppes of Madison.

“We’ve been looking at a lot of communities, and Madison has a lot of growth, families, businesses and professionals that really fit our brand,” said Smashburger spokesman Amit Patel. “We feel in love with the community.”

So what exactly is a smashburger? Cooks use a tool that smashes hamburger meat for 10 seconds, creating a sear that holds in flavor when the burger is being cooked.

“It’s what makes our burger unique,” Patel said.

The restaurant catered its menu to meet Alabama’s taste buds.

Each Alabama Smashburger, starting with Madison, will feature a regional menu including: the “Dixie” smashburger, which features a homemade white barbecue sauce, shredded leaf lettuce, fried green tomatoes and Swiss cheese on a toasted egg bun; an Andouille Sausage sandwich, featuring Chef Paul Prudhomme’s Andouille sausage with grilled onions and creole mustard sauce on a poppy seed bun; Cajun smashfries, shoe string cut russet potatoes seasoned with rosemary, olive oil, garlic and Chef Paul Prudhomme’s Magic Seasoning Blends; and debris fries, which feature a signature Smashfries topped with roast beef debris gravy and grated cheddar cheese.

“Everything is fresh here,” Patel said. “Our beef is 100 percent fresh angus. We have chicken sandwiches grilled and breaded. Everything is cooked to order.”
