Library plans creative sessions for adults this fall
Summer is winding down, and Madison Public Library wasted no time in scheduling fall sessions for adults.
Students will knit a handbag.
The first adult classes are knitting and creating a miniature book. Both classes are free.
“I picture the library as a place for the community to come and learn,” adult services librarian Rachel Hooper said. “The knitting class incorporates books and learning. The design comes from our book, ‘101 Designer One Skein Wonders.’ We try to meet the our community’s needs and feel these classes would be something people would enjoy.”
Knitting class dates are Sept. 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for anyone 14 years and older. “We’ll learn to make a handbag,” Hooper said. If everyone finishes early, the class will pursue another project.
“Anyone is welcome, whether they have no experience at all or have been knitting for years,” Hooper said. Hooper gained knitting experience by taking the library’s class in April.
“Madison County has a big knitting community. I feel there’s a lot of interest for this area,” Hooper said. “Knitting is very relaxing. That’s a big draw for people. Also, for those who enjoy listening to books on CD, this is a good hobby to do while listening.”
The miniature book class on Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. is open to individuals 18 years and older.
To make ‘mini-books,’ participants will use string, recycled cardboard, plain paper for pages and decorative scrapbook paper or gift wrap for the cover. A finished book will stand about one inch tall, just under an inch wide.
“Miniature books can be used as decoration or turned into earrings, necklaces or ornaments,” Hooper said, “and make great gifts for book lovers. They can be personalized with words or even small pictures, almost like a locket.”
Knitters will supply their own materials — size 13 needles and one 150-yard ball of super bulky yarn, 100 percent wool. Bernat Felting Wool and Patons Shetlund Chunky are suitable brands.
