Deadline nears for chamber’s small business awards

Madison Chamber of Commerce (MCC) is accepting nominations through Aug. 30 for the 2012 Small Business Awards.

By the deadline, individuals must mail nominations to P.O. Box 1065, Madison, AL 35758; or deliver to the chamber office in Hogan Family YMCA, 130 Park Square Lane; or email nominations.

The chamber “recognizes and celebrates MCC members who champion small business and recognizes the small business community’s contribution to the economy and society,” executive director Susie Masotti said.

The Ambassador of the Year Award acknowledges a MCC ambassador with one year of service “who has continuously extended themselves and their business as a representative and messenger of goodwill,” Masotti said. Nominees must complete a profile by Sept. 20.

The ambassador nominees then take a peer vote on the profiles. “Judging for this award is threefold: ambassador profile, peer vote and review by MCC office staff,” marketing and communications coordinator Felecia McInnish said.

The Startup of the Year Award recognizes a new business “that has laid the foundation for future growth and achievement by developing sound business strategy and practices … and showing entrepreneurial spirit,” Masotti said.

To qualify as a startup nominee, the business must be one to three years old and show determination for success.

Nominees for the Small Business of the Year Award must have been in operation three years minimum and deliver outstanding service, business practices and professional ethics, McInnish said. Civic involvement and community stewardship are important.

“The Excellence in Leadership & Service Award is given to an individual who has outstanding executive traits and civic pride,” McInnish said. “The nominee must be a lead officer of the organization being nominated; exert positive economic impact on the region and/or exemplify community leadership.”

The Small Business Awards Ceremony will be held at the Jackson Center, 6001 Moquin Drive in Huntsville on Oct. 25. Cocktail hour starts at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

The chamber reserves the right to remove a nominee from the selection process.
