Worry doll, painting classes planned at library

Two arts-oriented classes at Madison Public Library will allow patrons to apply their creative talents.

At the Sept. 17 session, participants will create a “worry doll.” The session will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. The class is free and intended for individuals at least 18 years old.

“Worry dolls are very small, colorful dolls typically made in South America,” adult service librarian Rachel Hooper said. The dolls are constructed with vibrant fabrics and traditionally made in Guatemala. Many tourists buy the inexpensive dolls as souvenirs.

“When people are unable to sleep due to worrying about something, they put the dolls under their pillows so the dolls take the worry away from them, which allows the people to sleep peacefully,” she said.

This session will teach participants about a different culture and expose them to different traditions, Hooper said. Participants do not need to know how to sew or have any other craft skills or experience.

To make the dolls, participants will use embroidery thread, cardboard, fabric and glue.

“We have a volunteer, Susana Vizcarra, who has offered to teach several classes for us this fall,” Hooper said. “Each person will make six worry dolls to take home.”

Worry dolls are popular in Central and South America.

A painting class is scheduled next on Sept. 26 at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $5. This class is intended for individuals who are 18 years old or older.

Session participants will use four four-inch square canvases to paint an image that depicts each different season. “I think the canvases would be cute to decorate a child’s room, because they are small. However, the canvases could be used anywhere.”

Painters will use acrylics. “I have a design the participants can use, or they can change it up, whichever they prefer,” Hooper said.

The library will provide all supplies for both classes.

Individuals interested in the worry doll or seasons painting class need to register at hmcpl.org. For more information, call Hooper at 256-461-0046 or send email to rhooper@hmcpl.org.
