Library pinning down local interest in Pinterest

Local enthusiasts can pursue their “Pinterest Passion” when Madison Public Library hosts this session on Sept. 25 at 6 p.m.

Participants at Pinterest Passion will make a button bowl.

“Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web,” youth services librarian Mandy Pinyan said. “People use ‘pinboards’ to plan their weddings, decorate their homes and organize favorite recipes.”

Browsing other peoples’ pinboards is the best feature, Pinyan said. “You discover and get inspiration from people who share your interests.”

“Madison is a savvy, hands-on community. Crafts programs usually (draw) a capacity crowd,” she said. Pinterest Passion is the first program in the county library system. “It’s good to offer a fresh, innovative program to Madison.”

“Pinterest is also amazingly addictive. Once you start, hours may fly by and your dazzled eyes will be full of images for yummy desserts, chic decorating ideas and your own laundry-fighting arsenal of homemade products that will change your life,” Pinyan said.

The projects have visual appeal as visitors ‘shop.’ “I’ve even seen libraries use it as a way to showcase new books that have arrived in the collection. It’s very handy and easy to use,” she said.

As a librarian, Pinyan checks out crafts and DIY ideas, “Books Worth Reading” boards and storytime inspirations. “As a mom, I like looking at ideas for kids’ rooms, playtime, early learning and outfits,” she said. Professionals, like photographers and designers, post their work.

Some disastrous, comical projects are listed at pinterestfail.com.

On Sept. 25, participants will make a button bowl with buttons of varying size and color, tin foil and paper bowls. “Buttons will be arranged and secured using Elmer’s glue and then a coat of Mod Podge applied to seal the bowl. It’ll need to finish drying overnight,” she said. After trial and error, Pinyan mastered the idea, which she pinned months ago.

No experience is necessary for Pinterest Passion. Teenagers are the target audience.

Participants must register in advance. The library will supply materials.

To register, call 256-461-0046, send email to mpinyan@hmcpl.org or visit Facebook/MPLYouthServices.
