Alabama Secretary of State predicts low voter turnout Tuesday

On Tuesday, Sept. 18 residents will go to the polls for the special constitutional amendment election.

“Most people think that you just go vote in November,” Alabama Secretary of State Beth Chapman said.  “However, ballot measures such as these have a great impact on how our state government works and it’s important to be involved in this process.”

Secretary Chapman predicts 20 to 21 percent of registered voters will go to the polls Tuesday.

Chapman said in the past, special constitutional amendment elections have brought as many as 50 percent of voters to the polls, but those elections involved more controversial and well-advertised issues.

Alabama voters will decide Tuesday if $437 million from the Alabama Trust Fund should be used to prevent budget cuts.

Polls will be open tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call 1-800-274-8683 or visit http://www.madisoncountyal.gov/voter.

A sample ballot of the proposed amendment can be found at http://www.madisoncountyal.gov/voter/sampleballots.php.
