Mustangs dominate early

BY SCOTT WRIGHT / FOR THE RECORD

The Madison Academy Mustangs kept an impressive show going on Friday night as they defeated the Westminster Christian Academy Wildcats 49-7.

This was a continuation of the domination that the Mustangs showed last Friday night against Elkmont.  Over the last two weeks, the Mustangs have put together an impressive 111-7 score against their two opponents.

Sophomore Kerryon Johnson has been especially impressive as he has scored seven touchdowns in two weeks while only playing in five of the eight quarters.

On this particular night, the field would provide some stiff competition as both teams would suffer a few minor injuries due to the wet grass and muddy playing conditions.

The Mustangs, in the first seven plays, would lose senior kicker/defensive back/wide receiver Chandler Trach to a knee sprain and freshman linebacker/running back Malik Miller to a re-aggravated ankle injury.

However, Kerryon Johnson would once again steal the spotlight with an incredible 204 yards rushing in the first half and three touchdowns. Due to Johnson’s performance and a terrific first half from quarterback Blake Coward, the Mustangs would be ahead 35-0 at the break.

The Wildcats were victims of their own mistakes all night as they turned the ball over four times in Mustang territory, twice fumbling inside the Mustang ten yard line.

Junior Jacob Parker led the Wildcat offense on several good drives, but unfortunately for Westminster Christian, they could only reach the end zone once.

Following that first touchdown score for the Wildcats, Kerryon Johnson would take the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for an answering touchdown that would be the final score for either side.

Mustang Blake Coward said, “It was a team effort.  We knew this would be a difficult game and we knew we would have to play hard the whole game.  We did that and were able to come out with the win.”

Madison Academy now prepares to host West Morgan next Friday night on “Play for the Cure” night.

The Mustang players, coaches and fans will be dressed in pink to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness and will present a check in support of this great cause. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at Bill Washington Stadium on the campus of Madison Academy.
