Bob Jones students audition for “Godspell”

For its spring musical, Bob Jones Musical Theatre will present one of the stage and screen’s most venerable and uplifting stories.

Auditions for “Godspell” will be held at Bob Jones High School on Nov. 5 from 4 to 8 p.m. “An information meeting begins at 4 p.m. in Zompa Auditorium,” director and drama teacher Mary Davis said. “Students who are interested in auditioning should plan on staying.”

After this meeting, Davis will waste no time and prepare students for the dance segment of auditions.

Debuting in 1971, “Godspell” presents the book of Matthew in a contemporary vibe of music and dance. Stephen Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics, and John-Michael Tebelak wrote the script. “Day by Day” is the show’s trademark song. In recent years, “Godspell” had a revival on Broadway, and the film frequently appears on movie channels.

The student actors will reassemble on Nov. 6 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium for a question-and-answer session. “If you have questions about the musical, and what it entails after the informational meeting on Monday, this is the time to speak up,” Davis said. The Bob Jones actors then will review and perform dance moves in small groups.

Nov. 8 will be reserved for the boys when they meet for opening rehearsals for singing and acting in the choir room. The girls will follow on Nov. 9.

“For acting, students should prepare a one-minute monologue to perform,” Davis said. The recitation “can be self-written, found in a monologue book or taken from a movie. Whatever it is, just have it memorized, and show your acting skills.”

In vocal audition, prospective cast members will sing one minute to background music — no a cappella. “Bring sheet music, or you may have instrumental music on an iPod or on a CD,” Davis said. “No background vocals for songs from ‘Godspell’ allowed.”

“I have to see you dance, act and sing,” Davis said.
