Deck the halls with painted canvases at Madison Public Library

December is here, so it’s time to get into the Christmas spirit. Madison Public Library is hosting a painting class, sure to generate enough holiday cheer to even motivate Ebenezer Scrooge himself.

On Dec. 3, the Madison branch will host a painting class for canvas ornaments. The class will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

“Each person will have two canvases to paint, each measuring four inches by four inches. You can hang them on your wall as decorations, or turn them into ornaments for your Christmas tree,” adult services librarian Rachel Hooper said.

Participants can choose between different subjects to paint. Hooper suggests one view that depicts round, oblong and teardrop Christmas tree ornaments. The other option is to paint a smiling gingerbread man with bow tie and buttons.

“I will also provide additional ideas, but people are free to paint any picture they like,” Hooper said.

“The library is excited to offer crafting classes. It is indicative of the role public libraries fill as gathering spots for their local communities,” Madison branch manager Sarah Sledge said.

No painting skills are needed for the class on Dec. 3.

“We will use acrylic paint for these canvas ornaments. Participants will paint their ornaments, and then I will provide ribbon to turn these canvases into ornaments,” Hooper said.

Hooper suggests using the miniature artwork to decorate a tree. “Or they can be placed around the home as decorations for the Christmas season,” she said.

The cost for the canvas painting class is $5 and is targeted for adults who are 18 years or older. To register for the class, visit hmcpl.org.

Upcoming classes for December at Madison Public Library include a painting class for miniature gourds on Dec. 7 and a session to make a wreath from recycled books on Dec. 17.

The library’s address is 130 Plaza Blvd. For more information, call 256-461-0046 or visit madison@hmcpl.org.
