Roads and renovations dominate city council meeting

MADISON — County Line Rd. conditions and Dublin Park tree removal was the main focus of the Madison City Council meeting on March 11.

“Roads, roads, roads” was the response to some of the proposed projects on the current Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) by Councilman Mike Potter over a month ago.

At the city council meeting on March 11, Potter along with many of his fellow city council members stood behind their commitment to building and repaving one of Madison’s most deteriorated roads, County Line Rd.

The council recieved and update from Director of Engineering Gary Chynoweth on a current plan to renovate and repave a portion of County Line Rd. in Madison.

“Part of the road is in Huntsville,” Potter said. “Half of that road is about ready to fail and cannot make it another winter. If we had waited for the ATRIP program to remain on schedule, all of County Line Rd. would have to wait to be fixed until after next winter.”

The city along with the Alabama Department of Transportation approved completing half of the project prior to 2014. Chynoweth said that the City of Huntsville was approached about the half of County Line Rd. in the Huntsville area but said the City deferred for the time being.

“We are basically going to take the part of our road that we have now and repave it,” Potter said. “Then we’ll come back and address other improvements in the future.”

Other items discussed at the meeting included update on the hazardous tree removal at Dublin Park by Parks and Recreation Director Kory Alfred.

“We were able to take down the hazardous trees and the playground opened this weekend,” Alfred said. “We’re working with the extension office to replace every two trees before we take them down.”

Kids Kingdom will remain open despite proposed maintenance work in the future. Phase II of the project will include marking off designated areas where residents can park at Kid’s Kingdom.

In other business, Mayor Troy Trulock proclaimed March as “Athletic Training Month” and accepted a $10,000 check for the Mayor’s Scholarship by the Madison Chamber of Commerce.
