Singers, models and contests approach starting line for Derby Days

MADISON – Fun contests, lively entertainment and viewing that world-renowned horse race are scheduled for Madison Derby Days on May 4.
Festival hours are 3 to 9 p.m. in downtown Madison along Front, Main, Church and Wise streets.
Large-screen televisions on Wise and Main streets will broadcast the Kentucky Derby race and are compliments of Dr. Eddie’s Direct TV and Dish Network, event coordinator Dawn Johnson said.
The Derby Hat Contest winner will receive $100 from Madison Arts Council. “Selections will be based on glamour, outrageousness and creativity,” coordinator Shrail Heinrich said. Entrants must register by 4:15 p.m. at the MAC booth. Prizes will be awarded at 5:40 p.m. after the Kentucky Derby race.
At the Farmer’s Insurance booth, children can make and race stick horses. Home Depot donated supplies. For the Bed Races, five-member office teams will dress in their business logos and race on Wise Street. Councilman D.J. Klein will emcee.
Country artist Cristina Lynn will open the entertainment lineup. Zoot Suit Riot with pop/rock beats will follow. Mike Ball and the Mountain Top Band will play bluegrass. That evening, Kozmic Mama will appear at Bandito Burrito.
Several fashion shows are scheduled for Derby Days. Posh Mommy and Baby Too, American Girl and Irish Dancers by Fitness Arts, Pink Pelican and Pelican Joe’s, the Madison Belles and Uptown Boutique will present their latest styles.
The Lewis-Powell House at 302 Church St. will be on tour as the Designer Showcase Home. Tickets are $5. Contributing businesses include Jenkins Brick with brick pavers for the home’s front walkway and Wolde Flooring for the kitchen’s tiled backsplash.
“Madison Derby Days would not be possible without the city’s support by Mayor Troy Trulock, Madison Police Department, Madison Fire and Rescue, HEMSI and businesses and volunteers of Madison, along with a special thanks to Councilman D.J. Klein for his assistance,” Johnson said.
