MADISON – Seeing students succeed is rewarding for Jeanie Moore, Staff Member of the Year for Rainbow Elementary School.

“It’s amazing to see how far and how independent students become (in a school year),” Moore said.

At Rainbow, Moore is responsible for in-school suspension (ISS) and monitoring third- through sixth-graders in computer lab, where most students concentrate on SuccessMaker software, Accelerated Reading (AR) and “Math Facts in a Flash.”

“It’s good to see them walk out knowing they did well on an AR test. Math Facts is a real challenge for some students; seeing satisfaction on their faces (after) mastering a level is a good feeling,” Moore said.

If students aren’t working or preventing distracting others, they are sent back to class. “Students don’t like to make that walk-of-shame back to class and explain why they were asked to leave,” Moore said.

Having ISS in the lab sometimes presents challenges. “Most students sit quietly and get their work done, but every once in a while a student gets distracted by the lab,” Moore said.

Moore always will remember Jo Ann Lillich, a media specialist at Turman (Colo.) Elementary School and the first person she met there. Lillich’s great imagination led children to enjoy going to the library. “I enjoyed the classes just as much as the students did,” Moore said. “She made it look so easy, but I know she spent lots of time pulling everything together. She is in her 70s and still teaching.”

Moore studied at Blair College in Mesa, Ariz., Northeast Area Vocational-Technical Center in Afton, Okla. and Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Her husband Larry retired from the military and Army & Air Force Exchange Service. The son Adam and wife Kim have two children — Andrew and Amelia, a fifth-grader and first-grader at Madison Elementary School. Courtney, 22, is a phlebotomist at Athens-Limestone Hospital and an Athens State University student. Emily, 20, is enrolled at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
