CIP projects rapidly taking shape post tax increase

By Aldo Amato

Staff Reporter

MADISON — Several Capital Improvement Project (CIP) resolutions were approved at the Madison City Council meeting on July 8.

Road fixtures, including a turning lane near the new Madison Hospital on Hwy. 72, highlighted the first meeting in July. The council approved payment to Reed Contracting for the completion of the construction of the turning lane. Reed Contracting was also the company that repaved Eastview Drive over a month ago.

“I’d just like to thank those at Reed,” Mayor Troy Trulock said. “They not only did an exceptional job with the work on Hwy. 72 but were quick also. They completed the Eastview project in just over two weeks. That’s what they do. They come in, do work and move onto the next project.”

Though most of the resolutions were in place prior to the approved half-cent sales tax increase, Councilman Tim Holcombe said with the increase in place. CIP projects like road fixtures and additions to buildings like the Madison Public Library are now gaining pace.

“It’s exciting,” he said. “Over half of the resolutions tonight were part of the CIP so they are picking up pace.”

Just around $60,000 from the 2013 CIP  budget was approved for two major proposed projects for the Parks and Recreation department.

There will be a meeting at Main Street Cafe for the CIP plan for Main Street and downtown Madison on July 9 at 4:00 p.m. Residents are encouraged to view proposed designs for downtown.
