MADISON — A week into the expected furlough at Redstone Arsenal, frustration seems to be setting in when it comes to gate traffic.

Garrison Commander Col. John S. Hamilton said Wednesday was the most traffic he has seen in years at the base and attributed the long lines entering the base to the furlough.
“Many said the furlough was going to be invisible to the public,” he said at a press conference at Gate 9 on July 10. “While some of the cuts might be, the gates will be the most visible sight of the recent furlough notices. There will now be 30 percent less capability for each gate.”

Traffic on Wednesday backed up to University Drive on Rideout Road leading into the Arsenal and all the way east and westbound on I-565. The reduction of the lanes was the main cause for traffic along with an unspecified, unauthorized vehicle trying to get in.

“We will continue to monitor the traffic flow in the next coming weeks,” he said. “Friday is expected to be just as congested. What we ask is for everyone to be patient during this adjustment. We’ll continue to assess and adjust within our defined constraints. It’s difficult for us all but we’ll continue to strive for improvement.”

According to Redstone officials, Redstone Arsenal’s Directorate of Emergency Services is required to reduce manning at gates throughout the week in order to furlough its guard employees for the mandated 8 hours per week.
