All Bob Jones High needs is one more match win, and it can lay claim to the 2013 AHSAA Class 6A volleyball state championship.

The Patriots reached the finals by taking down McGill-Toolen, 3-1, in the semifinals on Oct. 30.

After opening the match by getting down, 3-2, the Patriots came roaring back courtesy of a 10-2 run to take a 13-5 lead. It would be all BJHS needed, as the Patriots took a 25-16 opening set win.

Bob Jones stumbled a tad in the second set, falling to McGill-Toolen, 20-25.

It was the only blemish to an otherwise flawless set match for Bob Jones, which captured the next sets 25-16 and 25-14.

Head coach April Marsh said the victory was important, but that the squad would have to bring the same tough mindset to win the championship.

“From the beginning of the season, (we) set a goal,” she said. “Tomorrow’s going to take the same mentality.”

Jeneva Salter led Bob Jones with 16 kills and two blocks, while Alexis Howell had six kills, 12 digs and an ace. Erin Shockey had a block, three digs, 39 assists and an ace. Melania HIssam had 20 digs.

Bob Jones will face Huntsville for the Class 6A championship at 11 a.m. on Oct. 31 at the Birmingham Crossplex, located at 2331 Bessemer Road, Birmingham.
