MADISON – Musicians, ranging in age from five to 18 years old, in the Madison City Youth Orchestra and Harmony Home Music Studio recently performed at Bridge Street Town Centre.

For the Christmas tree lighting, their program included “Joy to the World,” “Jolly Old St. Nicholas,” “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” “Away in a Manger,” “Oh, Christmas Tree” and “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” Rebecca Wortham said.William and Rebecca Wortham conduct both groups.

Bridge Street officials have asked Harmony Home students to perform for five years. “This year, we asked our students in the orchestra to join our private students,” Rebecca said. “It’s a fun venue, and the crowds clap and sing along.”

Most orchestra members attend Madison high and middle schools, along with students from Sparkman High School, St. John the Baptist Catholic School and home schools.

The Worthams are thrilled with the orchestra’s growth. The intermediate level has grown from 11 to 34 members in three months. The advanced level more than doubled from 10 to 22.

“We are blessed to live in such a culturally-centered community where the arts are valued. Children and youth have so many opportunities,” Rebecca said.

Madison City Youth Orchestra will present its premiere Christmas concert on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at Madison United Methodist Church, 127 Church St. The concert is free to the public. In May 2014, they will perform their spring concert.
